A building that is used for religious activities and for worship services is called a church building or simply, a church. In an architectural sense, the term ‘church’ is mainly used by Christians to refer to a religious building where they can practise their faith. Traditionally, the architecture of a church basically represented the shape of a Christian Cross. From an architectural view of the place, the longest part of the Christian cross is symbolized by the aisle and the junction of the cross is positioned at the alter area. With the intention of directing the eyes of the audience towards the heavens, sometimes, towers and/or domes are added to the architecture.
History of Churches
The most ancient Christian house that has been identified by archaeologists is the Dura-Europos church which was founded between the years of 233 AD and 256 AD. Across Western Europe, during the 11th to 14th century, there was a huge occurrence of building cathedrals and small parish churches. In addition to the purpose of being a place for worship, the church or cathedral could also serve various other purposes for the community. It could also be a meeting place for various guilds or a banquet hall for celebrations. Plays and fairs also took place in the church premises.
Modern Churches
